I would love to open my own interior design company one day. Even though I am interested more in the decorating part than the architectural part I know it’s all in one package. I would eventually like to develope a company that not only handles decorating houses but decorates for weddings and other special occasions. Im currently a part time student,in the Chicagoland area, in my first year of studying interior design. Does any one have any tips oradvice on where I can start?
If you are interested more in decorating and party plannig, etc then don’t waste your money on interior design school since you won’t use it. There are schools that offer associates degrees in decorating. Look on the internet. Also, look for a part-time job at a furniture store. They have jobs where you can be a "design consultant" for customers shopping for furniture but they need help picking out different pieces and deciding what goes where. Or try to get a job at an event planning company doing whatever they need you to do. It won’t be glamorous at first. You just need to do whatever it takes to gain experience! Good Luck!
I’m in low panic mode…I still have time (wedding is 6/21/08) but I just found out details about my site not previously disclosed…
Originally it was to be on a large gazebo/deck overlooking the ocean…I called to find out about obtaining a generator permit (was told that was the procedure)..long story short, no power allowed, nor candles…no amplified sound of any kind….so unless we want a silent reception (not to mention the wedding march, etc)…’tis time to find a new site.
I’m at a loss…I work full time so I don’t really have the freeedom to browse along too much…If I can, I’d like to avoid the $$ of a wedding planner (but may have to deal with it)
I live in Virginia Beach, Va…(beach weddings are beautiful- but we can’t do a ceremony and reception there)
I’m so sorry this is happening for you. You are handling this extremely well and keeping things in perspective. You do have time, so something can be done – you couldhave found this out next spring – 3 cheers for advanced planning!
As much as you might want to avoid it, you will save yourself a ton of stress and grief if you bite the bullet and find yourself a very good wedding planner. If a planner does their job right, a lot, if not all of their fee will be covered just in the savings they are able to obtain for you. Their connections will be invaluable with less than a year to go. And, so you know, hiring a wedding planner can be for just parts of your wedding – it doesn’t have to be full service – this may be a more affordable option for you.
If I were in VA, I would offer my services, but I am in Pennsylvania. A good resource for finding vendors is: www.gatheringguide.com Make sure you meet with perspective planners in person to make sure your personalities are a match and check references.
Best of luck with your event & a big high 5 for keeping your cool!
My fiance’s friend from middle school is getting married in Mexico. I think they are getting off cheap because it is costing them only $1800 for their wedding, but it is costing us $450 per day to stay at that resort. Plus we have to fly there. I have my own wedding to plan and I think it is rather rude. I do not want to go, but he is a friend of my fiance’s for over 20 years.
Then just don’t go, if you are unable to afford it. They will understand. We are having a destination wedding, and a lot of our invited guests are not able to attend due to airfare and the hotel costs. We aren’t hurt. I certainly don’t think it’s rude of us either to have the type of wedding that we dream of having. If you can afford it, fine. If you can’t, fine too.
I recently saw a DVD with over 2000 weddings photos, and there will be more since 3 photographers were hired. I think digital storage has made photography at events excessive.
when my parents got married they hired one photographer and he took about 70 to 80 pictures. it was before digital cameras so they got a preview book with 4×6s of each picture and from there they could order more and different sizes of the ones they liked.
My fiance and I want an Island wedding, preferably Maui, but we fell it is too much to ask of our guests. We have done some research on renting vacation rentals that would hold about 25 people and us covering that and having our guests just pay for airfare, but that air is still so expensive. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it more affordable for our guests? Is there some kind of package deals for so many people?
Have you thought about getting married on a cruise? You can get married either on the island or on the boat. Cruises have packages where you just pick the cruise, island or on boat, and bring your dress and that’s it! You’ll save TONS of money compared to a wedding at your location. Packages are around $1,000-$3,000 depending on the island and package. So all you have to pay for is the cruise, your dress, rented tux, and the package. Practically stress free! Plus, you will be married and on your honeymoon at the same time!
I only wish I was doing this. It seems that planning a wedding at home is so stressful, that it is pushing me to elope.

Here is one of the most used locations in the movie, it is in a hidden private valley, most people never see. Lush jungle, taro pools, large river, mountains and waterfalls on 3 sides.
