obviously it’s the couple’s special day, so they should do it as they see fit. the idea of a destination wedding sounds fun, and it’s a kind of vacation for everyone. at the same time, is asking people to buy a plane ticket, pay for accommodations, etc. just too much?

in your opinion, how much is too much for an average cost for a guest attending a DW?

BQ: barring your real present situation, if you were planning a destination wedding, where would it be?

I think people who have destination weddings understand certain people may not be able to make it. I know many that have a destination wedding and then a celebration party at home after where everyone can attend.

If I were to do it I would do it in the mountains.

You know when someone has a wedding in like Hawaii or something, how do all of their guests get there? I mean how many people have the money to fly to hawaii for the weekend? Do the bride and groom pay? How does it work if you have like 300 people, how do they all get there???

Destination weddings are usually planned for small crowds, simply because not many people can afford to take a forced "vacation". Destination weddings are costly to the guest(s). Taking a vacation from work, not being paid while traveling, and spending money on things like air line ticket(s), a rental car, lodging accommodations, meals and such could add up to two thousand dollars. That is an awful lot of money to expect people to pay to attend a wedding.

I would say that out of 300 guests, you can expect perhaps 50 or less to show up. Money and jobs are tight these days and if it comes down to paying the day to day expenses of living or going to a wedding in Hawaii, I think people are going to stay home as a matter of priorities.

Now, if you were a millionaire and could afford to give away about $1,500 to 300 guests, then go ahead and have a grand old time.
